My day job is as a lawyer — granted, a modern American one — and to my ear, Uriah’s objections sounded impressive but mostly were not legit. For example, “circumstantial” is not a real objection. But as you point out, no one was equipped to deal properly with them. I would guess 80% of what Sephis sustained, he should have overruled instead. And yes, Sykes was given the assignment less than 90 minutes before the trial started and had never acted as a lawyer before.
